From 10 November 2018 until 13 January 2019, the Territoires de la Mémoire are hosting the 61 st edition of the World Press Photo exhibition at La Cité Miroir in Liège. This prestigious photojournalism contest is a true window on the contemporary world and all its realities. Impressive, challenging, the 160 exhibited photos show us a snapshot of the world the way it is today.

The annual contest rewards professional photographers for their best shots and their contribution to photojournalism. The exhibited shots plunge us into the heart of 2017’s compelling news items, such as the war in Syria, the massacre of the Rohingyas in Myanmar or the clashes in Venezuela. However, they also show us numerous contemporary realities concerning lifestyles around the world, our environment or even our societies. These images tell us poignant stories where life is at once tragic and terrifying, but also full of hope, co-operation and humanity. Today, the World Press Photo award is a global institution and an eagerly awaited annual get- together. In 1955, a group of Dutch photographers launched this contest with the aim of showing their work to an international public. Since then, the World Press Photo Foundation has garnered global, prestigious renown. Very much involved in the evolution of photojournalism, it offers an annual contest, open to all, which embodies an event that has come to feature prominently in the heart of the journalist and photographer profession. Award-winners’ press photos are chosen for their aptness and the message that they convey concerning the world in several categories (environment, sports, current affairs, nature, populations, etc.). All – or almost all – of them acquire the status of icons and are relayed by media the world over. The exhibition also tours in 45 countries and is attended by almost 4 million visitors every year. Through this major exhibition, the Territoires de la Mémoire are taking part in examining today’s reality with its conflicts, its social injustices, but also its acts of solidarity and humanity. World Press Photo questions freedom of the press, and the assignment of images and journalists in the face of these various problems. Most of all, it calls on each and every one of us to get informed and, above all, get outraged in the light of the violence and attacks on human rights.
